Fleet Insurance

For those with over 5 vehicles, a Fleet Insurance policy may be the best option. Fleet insurance provides a simplified policy where all vehicles are included on a single policy, with one renewal date, designed to save you time and money over individual vehicle insurance.

Fleet policy insurance can accommodate almost any mix of vehicles – including cars, vans, haulage, goods in transit, courier, company cars, and taxi – to offer greater buying power and flexibility to insurance. Policies can be taken out in an individual’s name or a company’s, with no age restrictions.

    Questions you might have

How many vehicles are needed to qualify for fleet insurance?

The minimum number of vehicles required to make up a ‘fleet’ policy can vary across insurance providers.

For Fleet policies – Flint can provide you with 5 vehicle fleet insurance policies to 400+ vehicle policies.

For Mini Fleet policies – Flint can provide you with policies for 2 to 5 vehicles.

For Haulage Fleet policies – Flint can provide you with policies for 2 vehicles and up.

As your fleet grows, we can provide policies that cover you to over 400 vehicles.

Flint can provide policies for collections of the same vehicle type, commonly – taxis, vans, company cars, HGVs and for families with several vehicles. We can also provide fleet policies for mixtures of vehicles.

What are the advantages of fleet insurance?

A fleet policy insures the vehicles (rather than the individual drivers). This provides more flexibility over who can drive the vehicles on the policy.

Can different types of vehicle be insured on one fleet insurance policy?

Yes. Almost any type of vehicle can be insured with a fleet policy. There can sometimes be restrictions on rare or high-value vehicles so please check with us when requesting a quote.

Do you provide cover for taxis?

Yes. If you are looking to cover more than 5 vehicles, then a fleet insurance policy will work better for you. If you are looking for insurance for 2-5 taxis then mini fleet insurance will suit your needs.

We can provide fleet insurance quotes for both private hire and public hire taxi fleets. Black cabs, mini cabs and mini-buses are all eligible for policy cover.

We can provide policies beyond taxis to cover cars, vans, taxi fleets, haulage and a mixture of vehicles.

Can anyone drive the fleet vehicles?

Yes. Most fleet policies are arranged on an ‘Any Authorised Driver’ basis which means that as long as they have the permission of the insurance proposer, anyone who holds the necessary driver’s licence can drive the vehicles.

This classically applies to employees and sub-contractors but can also extend to family members. But, please remember that the onus is on the insured to carry out the usual driving licence and DVLA checks for convictions etc.

The cost of fleet insurance quotes can be reduced by placing restrictions on who can and cannot drive the insured vehicles. For example, only allowing people over the ages of 25 with clean driving licences to drive your vehicles would reduce your premiums, i.e. your fleet insurance costs. Consider who will be driving your vehicles and ask us about ‘fleet insurance any driver over 25’ or ‘fleet insurance any driver over 18’ policies.

On some occasions we will need to ask for a little more information on the insured drivers. This is if the insurance underwriter needs to know more information about the drivers on the policy and any motor convictions. Our insurance brokers will advise you if the insuring underwriter requires more information to provide a quote and policy.

    When will the cover start?

Once a specialist advisor has spoken with you and researched the best fleet insurance quotes for your business, we will move quickly to confirm the insurance cover options. When we have mutually agreed on the best policy for you, we will action the policy with the insurance firm and confirm the coverage with you. Once we get you the confirmation, your business will have immediate insurance cover.

How long are the insurance quotes valid for?

The majority of insurance quotes from Flint are valid for 30 days. However, the validity period can vary across both insurers and quotes provided. We will confirm the validity period when we provide you with a quote. If you do not take up the quote within the validity period, a reassessment of your insurance needs will need to be carried out and a new quote established. This may differ from the original, depending on changes within the insurance market.

What levels of insurance cover can be provided?

Just like normal car insurance, we offer three basic levels of fleet insurance:

Third party – the minimum lever of cover to legally drive in the UK. Third party insurance covers your fleet for liability of injury to others (including passengers) and damage to third party property.

Third party, Fire and Theft – provides mid-level of cover to your vehicles. Third party, Fire and Theft cover provides additional cover for fire damage to your vehicles, theft of your vehicles and for damage to your vehicles caused during theft.

Comprehensive – provides the maximum level of cover. In addition to Third party, Fire and Theft, Comprehensive insurance provides cover for damage to your fleet vehicles if they are involved in an accident or incident, loss or damage to personal effects and, medical expenses for anyone involved in an accident or incident involving your vehicles.

    Can you cover vehicle contents?

Yes. As part of the insurance policy we can offer ‘personal effects’ cover for the driver’s personal belongings. Please ask us about vehicle contents cover when you speak with our advisors, and we will assess what level of personal contents cover will suit you best.

Do you provide cover for ‘Goods in transit’?

Yes. Most insurers also offer ‘goods in transit’ cover as standard. This provides essential cover for stock collection and protection for business deliveries.

Is breakdown cover included with fleet policies?

Not automatically. Most insurers can provide breakdown cover, but the cover will need tailoring to your policy. It is something you should discuss with our insurance brokers because the level of breakdown cover could vary depending on the type and age of your fleet vehicles.

Can I use NCD when moving on to a fleet policy?

Yes. The ‘No Claims Discount’ (NCD) usually comes into play when setting up a fleet for the first time, because you can use your personal no claims discount, as long as the vehicle that you drive forms part of the fleet.

How do I buy fleet insurance?

The type of client and size of business benefiting from fleet insurance can vary widely. In order to select an insurance policy and quote that fits your needs, we need to speak with you to answer a range of important questions about you and your business. A member of our specialist commercial broker team will spend time talking to you to assess your unique insurance needs.

You can contact us via telephone on 0800 021 4504 (9:00am to 6:30pm Monday to Thursday, and 9:00am to 5:30pm on Friday). Alternatively, fill out the form on this webpage and we will be pleased to call you back at a time that is convenient for you.

    Is fleet insurance actually cheaper?

Yes. For multiple vehicles, fleet insurance is generally cheaper than having a number of vehicles on individual policies. Depending on the size of your fleet, the savings on your insurance premiums could be substantial.

Do you offer price matching for cheaper quotes?

If you already have a quote from another fleet insurance provider, please share this with us and ask us for a competing quote. As an insurance broker, we are able to negotiate rates on your behalf from a wide panel of UK insurers, often at preferable rates. We will endeavour to find you the same policy cover for a lower price.

Can Telematics/Cameras save me money on my insurance premiums?

Yes. As long as they are used in the right way. Telematics are there to monitor driver behaviour and depend on taking a disciplined approach to correct bad practice such as speeding, breaking harshly, cornering etc. Good driving will ultimately reduce the number of motor claims.

In-vehicle cameras can be used to establish who is at fault and also prevent fraud.

These initiatives will not reduce premiums immediately, but if properly utilised they can reduce the number of accidents and therefore claims, which will ultimately cut the cost of your insurance.

Does my policy include a driving other cars extension?

No. Where as a private car policy will usually cover you to drive, say a neighbour’s vehicle, on a third party basis, this does not apply to fleet vehicles.

Can I use my vehicles abroad?

Yes. Currently they are covered for driving within the EU, but depending on Brexit, what you need to take with you when travelling abroad may change.

Can I use my vehicle for social, domestic and pleasure?

Yes, your fleet policy does extend to cover use of your work vehicle for holidays or whilst at home etc.

I also own the buildings that the motor fleet trades from. Can you cover this as well?

Yes. We can provide additional business and building insurance cover for your trading address. Speak with us about this so that we can find you a comprehensive policy which covers the risks and also the building itself.

What vehicle information needs to be supplied?

The cost of insurance premiums can vary significantly. A major factor for the insurance firm providing cover is understanding the size of your business, the number and type of vehicles and drivers it uses, its trading nature and the risks it faces. Before they can quote, the insurance underwriters will want to know about the number, type and age of your vehicles, as well as the number of drivers, the mileages they drive, the nature of the job and any motor convictions. It is advisable to gather this information before you speak with us.
