Van Insurance

Flint van insurance is essential for vans being used to carry out a trade, such as for the carriage of your own goods, tools and some light haulage. We look to offer the broadest possible cover whilst keeping your costs to a minimum.

We understand that your van is vital to helping you do your business as a tool of your trade; you cannot work without it. We deal with a range of specialist insurers, some of which allow us to reward sensible driving and low mileage with reduced premiums and others that we can approach to get the best deal for those who have unfortunately suffered claims.

Whilst this policy is aimed at those who use their van for work, we can still secure great rates for personal only use, so please do give us a call.

Please note: Van insurance does not cover couriers, which carries higher risks. Click here for courier insurance.

    Questions you might have

Is it better to have van insurance or courier insurance?

Flint can provide you with either van insurance or specialist courier insurance but be careful to check the cover and any exceptions.

Van insurance policies are often cheaper than courier policies; however, they do not automatically cover you for courier activities (this is because courier tasks are deemed a higher risk by the insurance providers).

Please, make sure to speak with us about your situation and van usage because an existing van or car insurance policy most likely not provide the necessary extra cover for undertaking courier activities.

How many vehicles can I cover using van insurance?

Flint can provide you with courier insurance for single vehicles through small fleet insurance policies of 2-5 vehicle policies, all the way up to policies that provide cover for up to 400 vehicles. For fleets with more than 5 vehicles, please speak to us about Motor Fleet Insurance.

    Can anyone drive the van?

Yes. Most policies are arranged on an ‘Any Authorised Driver’ basis. This means that anyone who holds the necessary driver’s licence can drive the vehicles – so long as they have the insurance proposer’s permission. This classically applies to family members and sub-contractors. However, it’s important to remember that the onus is on the insured to carry out the usual driving licence and DVLA checks for convictions.

By placing restrictions on who can and cannot drive the insured vehicles, the van policy’s cost could be reduced. For example, only allowing people over the ages of 25 with clean driving licences to drive your van would reduce the cost of your insurance premiums.

On some occasions, we will need to ask for a little more information on the insured drivers. This is if the insurance underwriter needs to know more details about the drivers on the policy and any motor convictions. Our brokers will advise you if the insuring underwriter requires more information to provide a quote and policy.

    When will the cover start?

Once a specialist advisor has spoken with you and researched the best courier insurance quotes for your business, we will move quickly to confirm the insurance coverage options. When we have mutually agreed on the best policy for you, we will action the insurance provider’s policy and confirm the cover with you. Once we provide you with the confirmation, you/your business will have immediate insurance cover.

How long are the insurance quotes valid for?

The majority of insurance quotes from Flint are valid for 30 days. However, the validity period can vary across both insurers and the quotes provided. We will confirm the validity period when we provide you with a quote. If you do not take up the quote within the validity period, a reassessment of your insurance needs will need to be carried out, and a new quote established. This may differ from the original, depending on changes within the insurance market.

What levels of insurance cover can be provided?

Just like normal car insurance, we offer three basic levels of van insurance:

    • Third party – is the minimum level of cover to drive in the UK legally. Third party insurance covers your fleet for liability of injury to others (including passengers) and damage to third party property.
    • Third party, Fire and Theft – provides mid-level of cover to your vehicles. Third party, Fire and Theft cover offers additional cover for fire damage to your vehicles, theft of your van and damage to your vehicles caused during a robbery.
    • Comprehensive – provides the maximum level of cover. In addition to Third party, Fire and Theft, Comprehensive insurance provides cover for damage to your fleet vehicles if they are involved in an accident or incident, loss or damage to personal effects and, medical expenses for anyone involved in an accident or incident involving your vehicles.

    Can you cover vehicle contents?

Yes. As part of the insurance policy, we offer ‘personal effects’ cover for the driver’s personal belongings. Please note, personal effects only covers the driver’s belongings; it does not provide cover for your client’s goods in the vehicle or ‘goods in transit.’

Please ask us about ‘goods in transit‘ vehicle contents cover and ‘public liability insurance‘ when you speak with our advisors.

Do I need “goods in transit” insurance?

It depends. If you are carrying a client’s goods for payment, you will require ‘Goods in transit‘ cover. ‘Goods in transit’ policies provide essential cover for stock collection and protection for business deliveries.

Do I need cover for “public liability” insurance?

It depends. If you are carrying goods in exchange for payment, you will need ‘Public liability insurance’ to protect you/your business against damage and legal claims against you.

Most insurers offer public liability cover – make sure this is included in your van policy. Our team will talk you through the requirements and costs/benefits of cover.

Can I use NCD for a van policy?

Yes. The ‘No Claims Discount‘ (NCD) usually comes into play when setting up a van policy for the first time because – as long as the vehicle you drive forms part of the cover – you can use your personal no claims discount.

How do I buy van insurance?

You can contact us via telephone on 0800 021 4505 (9:00 am to 6:30 pm Monday to Thursday, and 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on Friday). Alternatively, fill out the form on this webpage, and we will be pleased to call you back at a convenient time for you.

To select a van insurance policy, cover and quote that fits your needs, we need to speak with you to answer a range of important questions about you and your business. A member of our van insurance broker team will spend time talking to you to assess your unique insurance needs.

Do you offer price matching for cheaper quotes?

If you already have a quote from another van insurance provider, please share this with us and ask us for a competing quote. As an insurance broker, we can negotiate rates on your behalf from a wide panel of UK insurers, often at preferable rates. We will endeavour to find you the same policy cover at a lower price.

Can Telematics/Cameras save me money on my van insurance premiums?

Yes. As long as they are used in the right way. Flint Insurance recommend the use of telematics equipment to monitor driver behaviour. We also recommend you use in-vehicle cameras to establish who is at fault and prevent fraud. Good driving will ultimately reduce the number of motor claims and the associated cost of the van insurance policy.

Can I use my vehicle for social, domestic and pleasure?

Yes. Your van insurance policy extends to cover the use of your work vehicle for holidays or at home.

Does my policy include a driving other cars extension?

It depends. If your van insurance policy is for a private vehicle, the policy will usually cover you to drive, say, a neighbour’s vehicle, on a third party basis. However, this same cover does not apply to a van policy offered by courier insurance.

What vehicle information needs to be supplied?

The cost of van insurance premiums does vary. The insurance firms providing the van cover need to understand your personal usage and business usage. They need to know its size, the number and type of vehicles and drivers it uses, its trading nature and the risks it faces.

Before they can quote, the insurance underwriters will want to know: the number, type and age of your vehicles, as well as the number of drivers, the mileages they drive, the number of years of No-claims bonus, the nature of the job and any motor convictions. It is advisable to gather this information before you speak with us.
