Sugar Baby Love

Published: 12/04/2016

At some time during the 1970's Flint's John Price gave up his nice, safe insurance company job and went to work for a friend in the music business. This music management company had various bands and artistes on their books; the most notable at that time were Alvin Stardust, now sadly no longer with us, but also the Rubettes.

Whilst they might not be a household name these days, in the 70's practically every young female, without exception, would have swooned over the Rubettes on Top of the Pops, singing along to hits such as Juke Box Jive and Sugar Baby Love, which (without the help of social media) sold 6 million copies worldwide.

Since all those many years ago the Rubettes have continued to tour and in 2014 enjoyed their 40th anniversary, celebrating the fact that Sugar Baby Love became a massive hit in 1974. The Rubettes have, in the main, (as did Alvin Stardust), always relied on Flint for their insurance needs – a fact that we're rather proud of. We are therefore glad to report that as the Rubettes are once again undertaking a UK tour and Flint is responsible for making sure they are all fully covered.

The 2016 tour is called “An Evening with The Rubettes” and is going to be a slight deviation from the normal tour; as well as singing their many hits, they will also be chatting to the audiences about their lives and experiences within the music industry.

As for the Rubettes – they were originally the session musicians who were used to make the demo for Sugar Baby Love, with the song being previously offered to Showaddywaddy (hence the 'bop showaddywaddy' backing vocal), who turned it down. Fortunately record company boss Wayne Bickerton still had confidence in the song, so remixed the track with the original Da Vinci vocal and released it. Paul Da Vinci was signed as a solo artist to another company, and therefore unavailable, so Alan Williams was drafted in along with the original session band, and they then 'became' the Rubettes. Out of the 4 current band members, 3 are originals; that in itself is very unusual in this day and age.
